Christian Alfred Grover
Born August 6, 1864: Houston County, Minnesota
Died: September 14, 1910: Moland Township, Clay County Minnesota
Krist was born August 6, 1864 in Loony Valley, Houston County. His grandmother Kristi's name may well have been the inspiration for his. He was 10 years old when the family moved to Clay County.
At 6'2", he was the tallest of the Grover children. After attending the Grover school, he attended both St Olaf and Luther College. He enjoyed music - singing and playing the violin. He was a less extreme mix of his three older brothers -- he had Gus's thoughtful nature, Aleck's enthusiasm for life, and Ed's business sense.
In 1891, he and his brother Ed bought the home farm from Tarje. A year later, Krist struck out on his own and purchased land just northwest of the home farm. When Ed died, Krist inherited 320 acres from the estate.
Krist joined his brothers Ed and Aleck in their logging efforts during the winter months. He was an excellent blacksmith and had mechanical abilities. Aleck would boast "If its broke, Krist can fix it."
Else Bergland was a warm and good-humored woman, but her health was always frail. She and her husband were heartbroken when their first son, Oliver, died in 1900, less than a year after he was born. Else's health began to fail after a stillborn birth in 1903. She died in 1906. Krist was left with responsibility for their three children, who ranged in age from 4-9.
Tone Dalen emigrated from Norway around 1898. Krist and Tone's daughter Alice was born in 1908, as Krist's health began to fail. He started to sell his farmland and was considering a move to Oregon when he died, reportedly from tuberculosis of the spine, on September 14, 1910. He was 46 years old.
Tone took on the responsibility of raising all 4 of Krist's children and moved the family to a home in Moorhead. The extended Grover family, particularly Otto, made a point of including Krist's children in their lives and activities.
Tone lived with her daughter in the last years of her life. She died, at age 76, in February of 1956.
The family is buried at Concordia Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Glyndon.
