Christian's Son

Obert Rosenius Grover

Born February 2, 1903  Moland Township, Clay County, Minnesota

Died: March 2, 1990 Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota

Krist's respect for Carl Oluf Rosenius, a great Lutheran minister from Sweden who also wrote many hymns is reflected in his son Obert's middle name.

Obert was 4 years old when he lost his mother and not quite 8 when his father died.  Although he spent theObert Grover Family school year living with his stepmother and sisters in Moorhead while attending school, Obert's great delight were the summers and holidays he spent on the Grover homeplace as part of his Uncle Otto's family.

Obert graduated from Concordia Academy in 1919, attended both Concordia College and the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo before transferring to the Agricultural College at the University of Minnesota, where he graduated in 1925.  He taught agriculture in high school for a few years, then became Wilkin County Agricultural Extension agent.

On December 14, 1929 Obert married Lydia Loftness, daughter of Ole Loftness and Synneva Bakke, in Sibley County MN. They made their first home  in Breckinridge, where their son was born and Obert participated in the founding of Breckenridge Lutheran Church.

When his brother-in-law Carl Hegland died in 1943, Obert moved back to the farm.  Over the next 40+ years he would play a leading role in many community organizations. The associations of which he was most proud were his memberships and the elected offices he held in the Red River Potato Growers Association and Concordia Church.   Lydia & Obert 1980

Lydia attended the Minnesota School of Music. She gave piano lessons and was a church organist almost her entire adult life.  She  was the organist at Concordia Church for over 35 years, faithfully playing for services until the Sunday before her unexpected death on their 51st wedding anniversary in 1980.

Obert adjusted to life without his best friend and constant companion of over 50 years. He continued to keep a close eye on the Glyndon sports teams, played regular rounds of golf, and  often treated friends or relatives to meals featuring their choice of frozen dinners from his supply in the basement freezer - and now and then, homemade cake!

He had a series of strokes beginning in 1987. Obert spent his last few years living in the Moorhead Healthcare Center.

Obert and Lydia are buried in Concordia Cemetery.
