Christian's Daughter

Alice Sophie Grover

Born March 2, 1908 Moland Township, Clay County, Minnesota

Died: April 29, 1996  Moorhead, Clay County, Minnesota

Alice SopAlice when she was younghie Grover was the only child of Christian Grover and his second wife, Tone Dalen.  She grew up in Moorhead, but spent many happy times staying with her Uncle Otto, Uncle Alex, and other family members "on the Buffalo."

She graduated from Concordia in 1927 with degrees in English and Education, and spent the next few years teaching in Montana and Colorado.  Forced out of teaching by the Depression, she returned to Moorhead where she took a job in the county Registrar of Deeds office, and stayed there for the next 23 years.  She  began teaching piano lessons, and because of her excellent reputation,  had a waiting list of sometimes as many as a dozen potential students.  Many of her students stayed in touch with her for the rest of her life, and certainly all were left with a love of music and sense of discipline that in ways both big and small informed their lives. She was the pianist for the Moorhead Lions Club for 23 years, and played for the Rotary Club and otAlice at the Organ, Boy with his violinher organizations as well.

It came as a surprise to many when she married E. C. (Boy) Studlien in December of 1963.  A farmer of sorts and a recovering alcoholic, Boy was also a violinist. The two of them shared a love of music and enjoyed playing together at home and at various church and community gatherings. Unfortunately, in the early 1970's Boy again began drinking heavily.  Alice sought the counsel of her sister, Mable, and made the difficult and exceedingly painful decision to divorce him in 1974. Alice in her 80's

After her divorce, Alice returned to her home in Moorhead, where she lived until 1993.  In the 1950's, Alice's victory over breast cancer depended on large doses of radiation.   The radiation treatments brought on chronic bronchitis and, over the next four decades, slowly but steadily declining lung function. She moved to the Eventide Retirement Center in 1993, where she died in April of 1996.

She is buried in Concordia Cemetery.
