The Hageland Farm
The Hegland family name is taken from the Hageland farm. Mikkel married Else Olsdtr Hageland in 1847. He had inherited the Berge farm from his father in 1845, but he turned Berge ovcr to his brother Lars and moved to his wife's farm, Hageland. She died after giving birth to twins. Both twins, named Else and Tarje, died as well. Mikkel married Sissel in 1850. They spent a short period of time living in a cottage at Gastjønn before leaving for America. When choosing a surname, Mikkel chose the name of his first wife's farm, Americanized to 'Hegland.' The farm sits high on a hill (Minnesotans would call it a mountain) with an awe-inspiring view of the lake below. The only original structure that remains is the barn (now a garage). According to the current owner, this is an ancient place. About 1500 feet above the house is a natural arrangement of stones. Dating back to times before the Vikings, people gathered at these stones to offer sacrifices and worship the Norse gods. | ||||
