Lizzie was the last of the Grover children to be born in Houston County. She was born September 14, 1873 and arrived in Clay County before her first birthday.
Elise attended Concordia College and, like her brother Ed before her, taught at the Grover school.
She met Louis Olson and stubbornly insisted on marrying him. None of her big brothers thought him good enough for their "little sister." Louis was from Sweden and was therefore not to be trusted. Louis and Elise were married on March 3, 1898. Aleck and Krist conspired to be sure that regular, but not predictable, visits to the Olson farm outside Lake Park were planned to assure Lizzie was being treated properly.

Elise contracted tuberculosis and died in Lake Park on July 21, 1901. She was only 28 years old. Her son Oscar was not yet 3. Esther celebrated her first birthday just 4 days after her mother's death. Just as Otto took special care to include his brother Krist's children after his death, he also made sure that the Grovers stayed in contact with Elise's children over the years.
Elise and Louis Olson are buried in the Eksjo Lutheran Church cemetery in rural Lake Park, Minnesota.
Both of her children and many of their descendants are also buried in the cemetery of this beautiful old Swedish Lutheran Church. It is still an active congregation in the ELCA.
That
dry Norwegian humor at its finest.... Growing up I often heard the grown-up men talking about Tarje's children. There was great sadness that Elise had died so young....someone would break the ensuing silence by saying that Louie Olson "came from the wrong part of Norway, you know...." Everyone would start to chuckle and that was the cue to launch into story telling about the choreographed visits that Aleck and Krist paid on their little sister in Lake Park ... I wasn't let in on the real joke for over 30 years ... I reviewed census records that reported that Louis was actually from Sweden! There couldn't be a "wronger" part of Norway than that! --The Webmaster |
