Iver Halvorsen Kanten was born February 15, 1825, on the Klæstad gård (farm) in Gran, Hadeland, Norway. His parents were Halvor Olsen and Kari Helgesdtr. His wife Anne Gulbrandsdtr was born December 18, 1826 on the Brenna on Hilden gaard. Her parents were gaardmand Gulbrand Andersen and Marthe Ellingsdtr Hilden. The gaard or farm on which the Iver Halvorsen family last lived in Norway was the Kanten farm. This farm was in a fairly rugged area. The name means edge, rim, or border. Coat of Arms of the Banner Family associated with Erik Eriksen Banner (1484-1554) |
These coats of arms are tied to the Danish ancestors of Iver Kanten's great-grandfather Helge Gudbrandsen Hougseie. In 1640, the King of Sweden needed military officers and offered a farm to officers of other nations willing to serve. Albert Olsen, a member of Denmark's noble Banner family, accepted the offer and received the Heggen farm in Hadeland for his service. |
