Ole Erickson was not raised by his parents and probably
had a difficult childhood. In any event, he was not a successful man. He
married Johanne Hansdtr December 4, 1853. They moved from
farm to farm in the Hadeland area and for at least some period of time
the family was on poor relief. Hans saw his father's drinking as the
source of the family's problems.
Hans
Oleson Alm was born on the Dvergsten farm in Tingelstad, Gran, Hadeland on
September 9 of 1864.
This is the photo that was brought from Norway and which we had always believed was the house where Ole and Johanna lived before leaving for America. In June 2015, cousins Saundra Skrove and Anne (Grover) Sladky visited Hadeland. Local researchers believe this photo is of a summer pasture (seter) place where Martia and perhaps one or more of her sisters worked. Below is the photo of the husmannsplass (tenant farm) where the Norwegian researchers believe Ole and Johanna lived during their last years in Norway. It has not been occupied since they left in 1888. About 3,000 workers on the Alm farm lived on this mountain working in the forests. ALL of them had left for America by 1900. The area is now a summer pasture for sheep.

A cousin on his mother's side, John Dvergsten, encouraged Hans to come to America and offered to underwrite his passage from Norway. Hans made arrangements to leave Norway in 1885.
