Wisconsin Pioneer Certificate

Outline of the State of Wisconsin

The Wisconsin State Genealogical Society issues Pioneer Certificates to individuals who

can prove that their ancestors settled in Wisconsin prior to 1851.

Kristi and her family arrived in Wisconsin in 1846-7 and remained there for approximately 5 years.

The following proofs can be used to document your application:

1. Bendik Veum's Aettebog, pages 354-355.  Published in Fyresdal, Norway in 1943.

      Page 355

The pages from the Aettebog document Kristi's marriage to Aslak and Ole, Tone, Tarje and Aase's parentage.

2. 1850 US Census Image  Deerfield Township, Dane County Wisconsin

This is the proof required to verify your Wisconsin pioneer ancestor.

3. 1850 Census information from the Digitalarkivet

      Webpage listing Kristi and family

Because the family is listed as "Aslacksen" in the census, the notes added by the University of Bergen in their "Norwegians in the 1850 US Census" verify that Chistie Aslacksen is Kristi Olsdatter Graver.

The above will verify that Kristi is a Wisconsin Pioneer and that Ole, Tone, Tarje, and Aase were her children.  You must also provide a birth/death certificate, obituary (indicating the name of the paper and date), or other document that verifies each generation in your line of descent. (One obituary that lists an individual's parents, children, and/or grandchildren may be used as proof of more than one generation.)

Some Helpful Resources

The Minnesota Historical Society maintains a collection of almost all newspapers ever published in Minnesota.  The Red River Valley News was published in Glyndon in the pioneer era. MHS maintains a complete index of death certificates 1908-1996. Death certificates usually include the name of the deceased's parents.
