Tarje and Geline's Grandchildren
Tilde's Daughter
Ethel Marion Sandwick
Born: July 19, 1902 in Ottertail County, Minnesota
Died: December 15, 1990 in Conroe, Texas
Ethel celebrated her 7th birthday on the train that moved the Sandwick family from Minnesota to the Mountain View area near Corvallis Oregon. The local school only went through the 10th grade, so Ethel worked for room and board while she finished high school in Corvallis. Ethel completed one year at Oregon Agricultural College.
Frank Linton (1900-1984) graduated from Oregon State in 1922 and married Ethel on September 3 of that same year. The couple spent the next four years in Kellogg, Idaho where Frank worked for the Bunker Hill Mining Company and the couple welcomed their first child. Frank could not tolerate the mine dust and spent time in a sanitarium after being misdiagnosed as suffering from tuberculosis. As he was being released, Ethel was diagnosed with TB and spent two years in a sanitarium in Salem, Oregon.
In 1927, Frank took a job with the Army Corps of Engineers and the family moved frequently as he was assigned to various projects in the Pacific Northwest. Their second child was born in Portland. Frank served as Safety Engineer on the Bonneville Dam project.
The family put down permanent roots in Portland, Oregon in 1938. During WWII he worked on the construction of military airfields and was promoted to Assistant Chief of Operations. When Frank retired from the Corps in 1961 he was Chief of the Channel and Harbor Maintenance Sections.
In the summer of 1986 Ethel moved to Texas to live with her daughter. She was 88 years old when she died.
Frank and Ethel are buried in Portland (OR) Memorial Cemetery.
