Aslak's Farms in Telemark

Photos taken in 2015

Skrei Farm
Aslak inherited the Skrei farm when his father died.  It was by any standards a huge farm encompassing most of a mountain and contained excellent farmland, grazing lands, and a large forest. Aslak left the farm in the care of his brothers for many years while he took jobs around Fyresdal to build dams, sawmills, and other building projects. Why he decided to sell what is surely one of the premier farms of its day is difficult to understand two centuries later.

This clearing near the top of the mountain is where the original house and farm buildings were located.  When the site was cleared, the Skrei stabbur was moved and  renovated and is a mountain cabin in another location in Telemark. Below are three contiguous photos of the spectacular view from the farm building site.

This photo from 1927 of the family then living on Skrei
shows the front double doors and gives some indication of the size of the home.

Nusvik
Even today, the Nusvik farm is extremely remote. To reach it, after a long drive through the wilderness a long hike is required.  It is much easier to reach the farm on public roadways and then use a boat to cross the lake. The question is, why would Aslak sell one of the largest and richest farms in Fyresdal to buy/live on what seems to be a much smaller farm so far off the beaten track?
